With the invention of the GoPro comes innovation and freestyle skier Candide Thovex is without a doubt one of those innovators in ski movies. He has combined his master skill of freestyle skiing with a unique movie directing style that is making his movies go viral instantly. His latest movie, One of Those Days 3, already has 6.7 million views in 8 months. One of Those Days 2 has over 20 million views in one year. This is truly an amazing number and it reflects his creativity and ability to innovate.
Candide Thovex isn’t exactly an unknown in the ski world. At 16, he had already twice won the French Junior Moguls Championship. He’s won three Winter X Games gold medals (in Big Air, Slopestyle, and Superpipe), the 2010 Red Bull Linecatcher in France, and the overall title of the 2010 Freeride World Tour. He is also known for jumping Chad's Gap, a massive transfer jump of 120 feet from take-off to landing over a 40 feet deep gully in Alta. He is widely considered one of the best freestyle skiers in the world.
His movies have become notable for outrageous tricks such as skiing in summer, jumping over cows or helicopters, and weaving in and out of anything from trees and tunnels. All the while, giving you a point-of-view experience. I could go on and on about what he does, but I really don’t want to spoil the movies for you.
After watching the movies, you wonder “did he really do that?” The answer is YES. Candid is an amazing skier. Even at an early age, he was known for his innovation. But, what we don’t see is that he really has an amazing amount of natural talent with movie making. A lot of planning and logistics goes into all of the filming which is scripted. Then, a large amount of editing (done by Thovex) polishes the movie into a master piece of skiing entertainment that perfectly fits the interests of modern day by combining amazing feats and humor into a short movie that can easily be watched and shared by millions of people.
