Aspen Mountain (formerly known as Ajax) is part of the Aspen Snowmass resorts which includes Snowmass, Aspen Mountain, Aspen Highlands and Buttermilk. Each mountain has its own personality. This means you get access to four mountains on one lift ticket offering skiers/boarders a large variety of terrain covering 5,300 acres and close to the town of Aspen giving you access to a large amount of dining, nightlife, and shopping. Shuttle buses travel between all of the mountains, the town, and most condominium complexes. All of this makes Aspen Snowmass one of the world’s most popular ski resorts and one of the best overall resorts rated by Ski Magazine.

Of the Aspen Snowmass Mountains, Aspen Mountain is more challenging and not as family friendly as Snowmass, but it is a must do if you are an upper-intermediate to expert skier. Aspen Mountain is highly rated for overall satisfaction including off-hill activities, dining and après-ski making it a popular destination with celebrities. All of these may make you think that Aspen is all about the town. But, that is certainly not the case. Aspen Mountain is a steep and challenging mountain.

Despite only having 675 skiable acres, Aspen Mountain has a large variety of terrain for intermediate and expert skiers/boarders and with a 3,267 foot vertical drop, it’s steep. Aspen Mountain is known for its black diamonds with a variety of glades, bumps and steeps. The mountain is for skiers of advanced intermediate ability or higher. This is not a good mountain for beginners or less experienced intermediates. Aspen Mountain has some easier blue runs at the top, but it can be difficult to get back down.

Aspen Mountain Notable Trails:

  • S1 – a narrow, plummeting descent through the trees filled with moguls. S1 has pitches as steep as 42 degrees making it one of the most spectacular runs at Aspen Mountain.
