Broken River Mountain Resort is located on the South Island in New Zealand in the Craigieburn Range approximately 1.5 hours west of Christchurch. This hidden-gem is managed by the Broken River Mountain Resort and is a small no-frills old-school ski mountain without the fancy amenities of a larger resort. What Broken River Mountain Resort provides is a personable atmosphere with reliable snow and some of the best off-piste terrain in New Zealand giving you a unique “Kiwi Ski Experience”.
With 25 runs covering 741 acres, Broken River Mountain Resort is not a large mountain. But, it provides some unique qualities to make an enjoyable and unique experience. The mountain has two large bowls situated in an easterly layout. This positioning protects skiers and riders from wind and allows the area to collect large amounts of snow. The two bowls provide superb untracked skiing and snowboarding along with some stunning scenery. Some people consider Allan’s Basin as being some of the best backcountry skiing/boarding in New Zealand.
Broken River Mountain Resort provides steep basins, chutes, and drop-offs making it best suited for intermediate to advanced skiers and boarders. The area is also excellent for telemark skiing. Night skiing is also possible. On-mountain accommodations are available and will allow you to be only a 10 minute walk from the slopes. The one downside about the mountain are the lifts. The Broken River Mountain Resort is serviced by five high capacity rope-tows.
Broken River Mountain Resort Notes/Tips:
- The access road to Broken River Mountain Resort can be difficult to drive on. Be sure to have a vehicle that can handle difficult driving conditions. Keep snow chains with you if needed.
- Try the tranquil, backcountry atmosphere of Allan’s Basin. No ski tows, just you and the endless powder snow.
- Try out Broken River Mountain Resort's own craft-brewed beer at Palmer Lodge.
- You’ll need to bring your own ski gear. Broken River Mountain Resort does not rent.
