Cannon Mountain, located in scenic Franconia Notch, NH, is an old school mountain with no fancy resort and amenities. But, Cannon Mountain is known for some of the best pure skiing in the east getting high ratings from Ski Magazine for overall satisfaction, scenery, and challenge. Cannon Mountain stands at 4,080 feet, the highest ski summit in all of New Hampshire. With its famous 70-person aerial tram, riders can get amazing views across the region and the Presidential Range.
Cannon Mountain offers 282 acres of skiable terrain and a 2,180 foot vertical drop. With 95 trails plus several backcountry trails, it offers something for every skill level with groomers, steeps, glades, bumps, and terrain parks. Crowds are rare with minimal waiting in lines and there is a relaxed laid-back atmosphere. The mountain is also very easy to get to as it is just off the highway.
For experts or those looking for something a little different, when the snow permits, Cannon Mountain opens its back-country Mittersill area. Skiers need to hike a little to get to this ungroomed, all natural snow ski area. But with experts only terrain, it is always uncrowded. The one complaint about Cannon Mountain is the wind. The top of the mountain is exposed and it can get very cold and icy compared to other mountains in the region. The wind can then lead to lift closings. But, if you get yourself a nice day, you’ll love Cannon Mountain. Cannon Mountain is a state run mountain and they offer great deals to NH residents as well as other mid-week specials making it an excellent value. As mentioned, the mountain has limited nightlife, dining, and lodging at the mountain. But, you simply need to head down the road to Lincoln or Woodstock for that.
