Craigieburn Ski Field is located on the South Island in New Zealand in the Southern Alps approximately 1.5 hours from Christchurch. The mountain is known as being a difficult mountain. There are no beginner runs and there is no grooming. Craigieburn Ski Field is 100% off-piste skiing. Of the 25 runs, 45% are advanced to expert runs taking you through open bowls and steep chutes scattered over 988 acres.
Some believe that Craigieburn Ski Field is similar to heli-skiing with all of its fresh ungroomed snow and long backcountry-like runs. There are two large basins that are accessed by three high capacity rope tows. The terrain is varied and challenging. Middle Basin, is a 600m open bowl that is known for its steepness. Hamilton Peak is a popular spot. There are also many back-country possibilities including North Middle, True North basins and Mt Manson. The triple-blacks at Craigieburn Ski Field have been described as “suicidal”.
Craigieburn Ski Field does offer on-mountain no-frills accommodations. Considering the difficulty of the mountain, you’ll find hard-core ski enthusiasts from all over the world who come here for this unique experience. Craigieburn Ski Field is also located near the Broken River Ski area. It is possible to use the same pass at both areas and you can hike to the other mountain in about 15 minutes.
Craigieburn Ski Field Notes/Tips:
- There are no ski rental (ski hire) facilities at Craigieburn Ski Field.
- If you wish to venture off to some of the backcountry, be sure to bring avalanche gear since terrain outside of Craigieburn Ski Field is un-patrolled.
- There are three nutcracker rope tows at Craigieburn Ski Field. You’ll need to be in shape since it will carry you over 500 meters of vertical.
