Crested Butte Ski Resort, also known as “The Butte”, is located in southwest Colorado, within the Gunnison National Forest and the Elk Mountain Range. Crested Butte Ski Resort is considered one of the few places remaining that can be called a true Colorado ski town with no traffic lights or chain stores. The town started as a coal-mining camp in the late 1800’s but eventually became a ski town in the 1960’s. Even with the change, the town has kept its saloons, Victorian houses, antique streetlights, and false-front stores, maintaining its historic charm. This is why Powder Magazine has rated Crested Butte Ski Resort as the #1 Ski Town in North America.
