The Ohau Ski Fields is a small family run ski field located in the foothills of New Zealand's Southern Alps. It is about a 3.5 drive from Christchurch near the southwest shore of Lake Ohau. The 5,987 foot elevation will give you stunning views of Lake Ohau and its remote and unspoiled surrounding mountains. The Ohau Ski Fields is a small resort with a club feel. Even though there are only 15 named trails, there are 1,483 acres of terrain giving guests a large amount of terrain and no crowds giving you plenty of open space making this place a bit of a hidden gem. You will find the staff and other people at the Ohau Ski Fields to be friendly and open giving you that club feeling you won’t get at larger resorts.
The Ohau Ski Fields has great terrain for all skill levels. Beginners have 20% of the terrain with wide open runs over dedicated area with its own lift. Intermediates will find groomers and steeps. Advanced and expert skiers/snowboarders at the Ohau Ski Fields will have plenty of challenging off-piste terrain with an even larger amount available with some additional hiking. If you hike up to the top of the Ridge Run you will catch some spectacular views of the Southern Alps. There are two small terrain parks. The lift system consists of a fixed grip double chairlift, platter and beginners’ snow mat. Ohau Ski Fields also has snow-making cannons and grooming.
The Ohau Ski Fields facilities offer ski patrol, a cafe, ski and snowboard lessons, and ski and snowboard rentals. The Lake Ohau Lodge is available for skiers/snowboarders wanting accommodations near the Ohau Ski Fields. The lodge is not on the mountain but it is a short drive from the mountain near the shores of Lake Ohau and a shuttle bus will transport guests to/from the ski area. The lodge is a large hotel with great facilities, exceptional hospitality, and upscale restaurant meals. With reasonable prices and a warm atmosphere, it is popular with families making it an inexpensive alternative to the big commercial ski resorts.
Ohau Ski Fields Notes:
- Take Tom’s Drop or Escalator for some excellent off-piste steep terrain.
- Another great way to visit the Ohau Ski Fields is to join a hosted ski safari which includes a visit to this ski area in its itinerary.
