Roundhill Ski Field is a small ski field known for being a great family and beginners’ mountain, but it has seen some large changes since 2010 transforming it into one of the largest ski resorts in New Zealand. With the expansion, Roundhill Ski Field now can claim 1358 acres of terrain with a 2,569 vertical drop, the largest in New Zealand. The resort can also boast having the world’s longest and steepest rope tow. The ski area is located in the Mackenzie District, half way between Queenstown and Christchurch. Roundhill Ski Field is located high above Lake Tekapo and provides spectacularly views of the lake and the surrounding mountains. Overall, it’s a family-friendly off-the-beaten-track ski field with something for everyone at very reasonable prices.

Roundhill Ski Field

Roundhill Ski Field has 14 named trails and a terrain park. The lower (“old”) area of the mountain has two T-bars that access various groomed intermediate runs and a beginner a green trail. The terrain park is also in this area. The beginner’s area has a platter lift and a couple of small rope tows. The newly expanded area is accessed from the super long nutcracker rope tow, Heritage Express, up a large face of the mountain. From the top, advanced skiers and snowboarders will find long, wide and steep terrain. If you go to either side of the rope tow you will find some excellent off-piste terrain. With the small crowds at Roundhill Ski Field, this can be a paradise for many. One complaint at Roundhill Ski Field is that some have is that the slope faces the sun and it is prone to melt-freeze cycles.

The facilities and services at Roundhill Ski Field are basic, but you will find everything you need. Although there is a café, many people bring their lunch. You can rent equipment and there is a ski and snowboard school. There is no on-mountain accommodation at Roundhill Ski Field. You’ll need to go to nearby Tekapo which has many options. Unlike numerous access roads to ski field in New Zealand, the road to Roundhill Ski Field is not particularly steep with scary drop-offs.
