Sunday River, located in western Maine, is a large mountain for the eastern United States with 135 trails and 8 peaks. There is a highly rated extensive lift network allowing people to venture to different peaks which all have their unique character. Having so many peaks also allows skiers and boarders to get away from the crowds. The mountain has excellent snowmaking and grooming. Combined with a large natural snowfall, Sunday River is highly rated by various magazines for snow. Aggressive snowmaking in November allows Sunday River to be one of the first mountains to open every year giving it an extensive season every year.

Sunday River

Sunday River is a little hard to get to and it can be a little pricey. But, Sunday River does offer the second most acreage in the east, after Sugarloaf, with 870 acres. Sunday River has 8 peaks each with their own character and variety for different levels: White Cap – for steep runs, Locke Mountain – for old school terrain, Barker – is the central peak, Spruce Peak – for cruisers, North Peak – terrain parks and a superpipe, Aurora – for glades and steep runs, Oz – for natural snow, and Jordan Bowl – for stunning views and cruisers.

Sunday River has a number of ski-on ski-off lodging options. If you are staying at the Sunday River Resort, the amenities are not the greatest compared to some of the other resorts, but it has everything you need for a nice long weekend and some of the restaurants get high marks. There are also excellent après-ski options in the town of Bethel.

Sunday River Tip:

  • If staying on the resort, do first tracks and start with the Chondola (half gondola-half chair lift) to escape the crowds and get some fresh cords.

Sunday River Notable Trails:

  • White Heat – long and steep double-diamond.
